State of the Union (pulling roots)

Close-up of a dried flower suspended in midair with exposed roots and drifting water droplets, symbolizing uprooting, cultural disconnection, and the longing for reconnection expressed in the poem “State of the Union.”

It has been a long slow process,

pulling ourselves up by the roots,

disengaging from our connection

with Earth and language,

spirit and culture.

We are now floating free

in the turbulent sea

of fear.

The disconnect is driving us

away from each other,

away from values,

away from lives well-lived

and spirits well-expressed.

The disconnect is driving us

to drink and drugs,

to road rage and dysfunction,

to assault rifle mass shootings,

to hurting and torturing,

to rejecting millions

seeking safe refuge,

to any addiction

that will obliterate

the emptiness of disconnect.

These drying out roots

are hanging and crackling

in the breeze of

the fake, the virtual and reality TV.

And in their last

conscious moments

these drying out roots

are longing for

Earth and water,

are aching for

joyful re-union.
